Resin-bound surfacing across Vancouver Island

We work from Sooke up to Campbell River, and further north for bigger jobs. The surface is the same everywhere. The ground and the weather aren't, so this is what we look at in each part of the island.

Same product, different ground

Greater Victoria gets about half the rain of the north island. The Cowichan Valley sits on heavy clay, the central island on glacial till and rock, and the Comox Valley gets real snow off Mount Washington. That changes how we prep the base, where we add drainage and which blend we suggest.

Greater Victoria

Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, View Royal, Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, Sooke, Sidney, Central and North Saanich

The driest part of the island, with more sun on bare concrete and salt air near the water. A lot of older Saanich and Oak Bay homes have concrete that's structurally fine but tired on the surface. We usually resurface over it rather than tear it out, and fix any failing sections first.

Cowichan Valley

Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake, Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith

Warmer in summer and wetter in winter than people expect. Much of the valley sits on heavy clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries, which is why pavers go uneven here sooner than they do down south. Base prep gets extra attention on every Cowichan quote.

Central Island

Nanaimo, Cedar, Lantzville, Nanoose Bay, Parksville, Qualicum Beach

Heavy rain from November to February, especially around Parksville and Qualicum Beach. A surface that drains is close to essential for flat driveways here. Nanaimo has plenty of older slab-on-grade concrete that's cracked at the joints, plus newer subdivisions where the grading isn't perfect. We sort the drainage out on the site visit.

Comox Valley

Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, Royston, Union Bay, Fanny Bay, Black Creek, Merville

Proper winters: snow off Mount Washington, more freeze-thaw cycles and a lot of meltwater crossing properties. We see more frost-heaved pavers and cracked concrete pads here than anywhere south of Campbell River. Book prep for late summer or early fall, before the wet sets in.

Campbell River and north

Campbell River, Sayward, Port McNeill, Port Hardy

The wettest, roughest weather on the island, so drainage comes first. We work around Campbell River regularly. Further north we'll come for the right project, with travel costs agreed up front. Give us a call either way.

Smaller communities too

Most of what we quote is off the main highway. If your town isn't listed, it doesn't mean we don't go there. These are a few more we visit regularly.

Travel and timing

Not sure if you're in range? Call (250) 802-6488 and ask.

Where are you based?

We're a family business based in Nanoose Bay, on the central island, without a showroom. We plan routes so jobs in the same area are booked together, which keeps travel costs out of your price.

Do you charge for a site visit?

No. Site visits are free anywhere from Sooke to Campbell River. North of Campbell River we'll still come out, and we'll agree any travel cost with you before the visit.

Do you work on Salt Spring or the Gulf Islands?

For projects big enough to justify the ferry, yes. Long driveways and larger patios usually are. Call us to talk it through.

How soon can you come out?

Usually within a week or two, depending on the season and where you are. Mid-island is closest, since we're based in Nanoose Bay.
