Resin-bound driveways on Vancouver Island

A natural stone driveway with no joints, no puddles and very little upkeep. We lay it over sound concrete or asphalt, or build a new permeable base where there isn't one.

  • Drains rain straight through, even on flat driveways
  • Built to take cars, with the depth matched to how you use it
  • Usually no demolition when the slab underneath is sound

Why it suits island driveways

Concrete cracks at the joints, asphalt softens and ruts, and pavers heave in the first wet freeze. A resin-bound driveway doesn't have an obvious weak spot.

  • Drains straight through

Rain soaks into the surface instead of sheeting toward the garage or pooling at the low spot.

  • Built for cars

5/8 inch thick where you drive straight on and off, 3/4 inch where wheels turn, over a sound slab or a new base.

  • Rides out freeze-thaw

The resin has a little flex, so it doesn't crack along control joints the way concrete does.

  • No weeds or moss

One continuous surface with no joints for seeds to land in or moss to root.

  • Low upkeep

Sweep it, pressure wash it once or twice a year, and give it a light reseal every five to ten years.

  • Colour that lasts

Natural marble and quartz in a UV-stable resin, so the blend you pick is the blend you keep.

Two ways we build it

Which one you need depends on what's there now. We check on the site visit and explain it before you get a price.

Most common

Over your existing driveway

If your concrete or asphalt is structurally sound, we resurface it in place. No demolition, no disposal fees and a lot less mess.

  1. Repair cracks and any failing sections
  2. Clean and prime the old surface
  3. Lay Vuba's structural reinforcement mesh (SRM) to help bridge cracks
  4. Trowel on the stone surface, 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick for driveways

A new permeable base

Where there's no sound slab, we build the whole thing. The finished driveway drains all the way through to the ground.

  1. Dig out and lay a geotextile membrane
  2. Compact a free-draining clean stone base and a capping layer
  3. Lay Vuba's resin-bound VubaMac base with reinforcement mesh
  4. Trowel on the stone surface

Resin-bound vs. concrete, pavers and asphalt

Plain concrete usually costs less up front. The difference buys you drainage, no joints and far less upkeep. When we quote, we'll explain exactly what's driving the price.

Typical residential installs. Permeable pavers and porous asphalt exist, but they cost more and are rare on the island.

Driveway questions

More on the FAQ page, or call (250) 802-6488.

Will it hold up to cars and trucks?

Yes, when it's built for it. Driveways get a thicker surface (5/8 inch, or 3/4 inch where wheels turn) over a sound slab or a properly built base. Very heavy vehicles like RVs or delivery trucks need a heavier base, so tell us if you park one.

Can it go over my existing concrete or asphalt?

Usually, yes. If the slab is structurally sound, with no major settling or crumbling, we repair the cracks, clean and prime it, lay a reinforcement mesh and trowel the stone surface over the top. That saves the cost and mess of demolition. If the base is failing, we'll show you on the site visit and price a new base instead.

How does it handle snow, ice and de-icing salt?

Well. Water drains through instead of sitting on top, so there's less to freeze, and the resin is made to flex through freeze-thaw rather than crack. For snow, use a plastic shovel, or a plow or snowblower with a plastic blade. Metal blades can scrape stones loose. Vuba doesn't publish guidance on de-icing salt, so ask us before you use any.

How does it compare to a rubber driveway?

Both are permeable surfaces that can go over old concrete. Rubber paving is made from recycled rubber crumb and feels softer underfoot. Resin-bound is natural marble and quartz, so it looks and feels like stone and comes in 32 blends. We only install Vuba Stone, so take our view with that in mind, and we're happy to talk through both on a site visit.

Can it go on a sloped driveway?

Yes. Because water drains through rather than across it, slopes and flat spots both work well. Very steep driveways need a look on the site visit, and the stone texture gives tires and shoes good grip.

What about oil, leaves and moss?

It's stain-resistant, not stain-proof. Most spills rinse off, and because liquids drain away they don't sit long enough to soak in the way they do on concrete. Clean up fuel and oil quickly, and use a degreaser and a pressure wash for anything stubborn. In shady, damp spots a little moss or algae can grow on the surface; a dilute bleach wash or Vuba's surface cleaner clears it. Try not to turn the steering wheel while parked, which scuffs any driveway.

How much does a resin-bound driveway cost?

It depends on the size, what's there now, edging and the blend. Published installed prices for resin-bound surfacing in the US mostly run about US$10 to US$18 a square foot, and the Canadian quotes we've seen published run about C$14 to C$20. Resurfacing a sound slab sits toward the lower end; a new permeable base adds digging and materials.

That's more than plain concrete or asphalt, and usually less than good interlocking pavers. We measure for free and send a written, all-in quote, with any base repairs spelled out.
